Kindreds: Deities (Dedicant Path Essay)

The Gods and Goddesses are in some ways, the deepest of our ancestors, if the lore is to be believed. They are at least our elder cousins, like us in many ways, but stronger, wiser, and generally less limited. They are not transcendent, like the Christian God, nor are they limitless. They are immanent in this world and share it with us. They are not one god and goddess, they are many - most whose names have been forgotten, but some that we can know and seek.

I have felt called to the service of the Shining Ones since before I knew what I was experiencing. As I studied to join the Catholic church as a young woman, I chose as my patroness Brigid of Kildare. Yes - that Brigid! I felt absolutely compelled by her, and despite my determination to choose a modern, verifiable saint, she would not leave my mind.  She came to me on the night of my confirmation. I felt absolutely surrounded and overwhelmed by her presence,  definitely feminine, wise and motherly, but strong. Confusion does not begin to describe this experience. I spent the evening in tears, and more or less immediately set out looking for the being who had touched me.

This is the only mystical experience I have ever had, and sometimes I doubt myself. My efforts to develop a relationship with Brigid fell flat. She touched me because she could reach me, I think, but she is not my patroness. I wandered through Wicca, and found ADF in 2012. I have been relentlessly drawn to the gods of Gaul since then, and have spent the last few years researching and offering to Taranis and Nemetona, Sulis and Donu.
